Speaking Truth into the Lives of Our Kids

Summer schedules seem to fill up so fast. You may be struggling to fit in your kids’ favorite activities between much needed down-time and summer vacations. As you decide what takes priority in your what’s left of your summer, I want you to think about this: Studies show 75 percent of kids who are part of a strong evangelical church will leave the church and any connection to Christ from age 18-29.

Further research asked this question: What was happening right in the 25 percent who stayed?

Research shows five things were true of the 25 percent who DID NOT leave the church and a relationship with Christ from age 18-29:

  1. Ate dinner at least 5 of 7 nights a week as a family
  2. Served WITH their families in a faith-based ministry
  3. Were entrusted with significant responsibility in a ministry at a young age
  4. Had at least one significant spiritual experience in the home during the week
  5. Had at least one adult in their lives, other than their parents, who believed the same thing as their parents

Attending a summer VBS program is an opportunity to see #5 happen in your child’s life. So give your kids a fun, engaging and memorable week of exploring science and the “BASIC” elements of faith at Riverwood’s Science VBS Day Camp. And when you are having family dinner, enjoy hearing a recap of their hands-on science experience and practice reciting the daily Bible verse with them.

Josh Denhart is the Children’s Pastor at Valley Church in West Des Moines, as well as the author of the BASIC Elements VBS curriculum. Josh hosts a traveling, character-based program called “The Amazing Chemistry Show”  where he gets to combine his chemistry teaching background and love for Jesus. Josh is married to Sarah, and together they have four kids.

One of the “basic” elements of faith is scripture memory. Memorizing Bible verses comes easier to some, but maybe not for you.

At Riverwood Church’s “Science VBS Day Camp,” your kids will be encouraged to memorize a Bible verse that corresponds with each lesson — Believe, Ask, Serve, Impact, Celebrate. Each memory verse has it’s own scripture song written by Lantern Music.

Your kids will enjoy hearing these catchy tunes and watching the professional music videos that go along with them. Hopefully they will come home each night singing these songs and eager to share their new Bible verses with you. What a great opportunity to work on scripture memory as a family this summer!

Science VBS Day Camp is coming!

by Erin Bird

I don’t usually get excited about curriculum. I’m more of a “custom fit” type of guy. But I couldn’t be more excited about our upcoming Science VBS Day camp!

I think our Day Camp has the potential to launch your kids’ summer to a completely different level with an explosive VBS program like they’ve never experienced. Your kiddos will explore the world of science – from launching rockets to squishing slime — while walking through five BASIC elements of faith — Believe, Ask, Serve, Impact, Celebrate.

Both days, kids will hear the Word of God through “science devotionals.” They’ll play science games, have science-themed snacks, and watch crazy science demonstrations. On top of that, your kids will actually enjoy the Bible verse memorization through scripture songs featuring Lantern Music. (Really!)

[pullquoteleft] And just as God has impacted Josh’s life through the story of Jesus, I pray that this summer’s Science VBS Day Camp will impact your kids’ lives as well! [/pullquoteleft]And on a personal note, one of the cool things about this curriculum is that was written by a guy I went to high school with. Josh Denhart was a slightly-out-of-control red head a couple of grades behind me. While I was in college, my brother, who was in the same class as Josh, told me Josh had completely changed and was now following Jesus. His life-path has taken him from being a high school chemistry teacher to being a children’s pastor at Valley Church in West Des Moines. And just as God has impacted Josh’s life through the story of Jesus, I pray that this summer’s Science VBS Day Camp will impact your kids’ lives as well!

While pre-registration is not required, it would help us a bunch if you’d let us know your kids are coming. So please fill out this easy form and let us know you’re coming!
